Trying to make a living out of your passion is definitely not the easiest path to take in life. For a start, you actually need to to know in your heart that you are good enough to proceed and once you have gotten over that hurdle, the next hurdle asks for perseverance and the ability to remain focused. Creativity often comes with a side of procrastination which is the frustrating part of the process because that is when people start to wonder if they are making the right decision. Self doubt is very real and very crippling and very much a little c*nt.
This is the third year that I have attended the Carbon event here in Melbourne hosted by Acclaim Magazine. Every time it amazes me how this humble mag is able to put on such an inspiring event. Every year they seem to take it up a notch and their small, but hard working team have managed to make the absolute monster that is planning and organising look easy.
It warms my cockles to see creatives come together from all different backgrounds and ages and perspectives with the intention to do nothing but inspire and be inspired. To give of yourself creatively in order to make a living involves taking many risks and it is virtually impossible to do it on your own. I know those nights we stay up writing, painting, designing, making music, researching, drawing and planning can feel lonely but what is comforting to me is to know that there are millions of others out there who, just like me, are not stopping even when the option to do just that can be pretty fucking tempting.
Because we’re here for a good time, not a long time. Ain’t that so?
